Is TV bad for your baby?

Many people always tell us parents not to let our children to watch TV especially at a young age because it will definitely spoil their eyes. This would apply the same for computer screen or any kind of screen with flashing images.

In my opinion, I don't believe that watching TV would spoil our kids vision but rather the long hours of staring at the same thing for too long. This is because the main reason why children are short sighted is because when they are constantly looking at something for a long time at a constant distance, their eye muscle (more specifically which hold their lense which has the main fuction of focusing the light to the retina) does not get to contract or stretch as much. So the muscle becomes less flexible and thus affect the vision of our children.

With this theory in mind that staring at something for too long and doing it everyday would spoil your vision means that staring at anything for too long such as an aquarium or a person or anything at all can affect a person vision. Which is why opticians always emphasize on the importance of eye exercise.

With that, I don't believe that watching television is bad but instead I encourage children to watch television because it is another tool to learn new things and also explore the world. Educational programs and also entertainment programs allow us to learn about other culture, religion, language, interest which in our normal daily life we may not have any chances of encountering.

For me, I do not have the opportunity to travel much but at least from these programs, I am aware of things which are different compared to my surroundings, culture and traditions.

Thumbs up for television!
